Try this:

West on 10 to Santa Monica, 385 mi.
North on 101 to San Jose, 380 mi. all along the coast.
Northeast on 680, 580, 205, 5 to Sacramento, 125 mi.

Look on Yahoo! Maps or Mapquest for specific directions. You'll have to specify Santa Monica to Santa Barbara (or Santa Maria, or San Luis Obispo) then Santa Barbara to San Jose to stay on the coast, otherwise you'll get a route from Santa Monica to San Jose on I-5.

Good luck! Post lots of pictures!

That's what I was thinking; I don't know why I wrote 101 up to San Jose. It must be Friday; my brain's shot.

10 to Santa Monica
101 to San Luis Obispo
1 to San Jose/Frisco
680, 580, 205, 5 to Sacto

You'll go through Morro Bay, Cambria, San Simeon (Hearst Castle), Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey, Santa Cruz; what a trip!

(Thirteen years ago, on my tenth wedding anniversary, my wife and I drove to Yosemite for two days at the Ahwahnee, then drove out to the coast and spent two days in Carmel, two days in Cambria, two days in SLO, two days in Solvang, two days in Santa Barbara. We had an incredible time.)
