Best A/V receiver for $400 and below?

Dont cheap out on amp or speakers...the source components are a dime a dozen unless you are running true HD vid.

So this is what I don't really get, and I guess I'm too lazy to go get all the technical details. What makes a $800 receiver better than a $500 one that is better than a $300 one. They all have the input/outputs for the most part. Their DACs are very similar. Is it truely a power issue and how clean the power they produce?
I have an older Nakamichi receiver that only supports 5.1. No digital, no DTS, no component inputs, etc. But it produces some really clean power. I love it, now only if it would support everything else.
I'm not against spending the money, I just don't know why I would. Thanks for the suggestions and the help. Now I have to look at HK more closely, thanks Colin!!!
