DVD Player
I am not sure if this topic was covered, but I am in the market for a DVD player.
I want to know what you guys think is the best for the least money spent. Also, how do you know if you need a decoder? or something like that
I will be hooking in up to my current entertainment system: Toshiba Cinema Series TV, Yamaha V490 receiver, JVC VCR, and 5 speaker system. What do I need?
I am thinking of just a basic good quality player.

The only real difference in dvd players is the audio they can output. Just buy one that will be compatible with all of the audio features your yamaha supports. They all basically output the same video and extra features such as slow motion or zoom are useless.
I have a Pioneer 3 disc DVD player. I love it. You want to make sure your DVD player has optical out for audio and component out for video. Also, make sure it is Dolby Digital DTS compatable too, which most DVD players are today. I would reccomend Pioneer or Sony. Try to stay away from the no-name brands or the ones that seem just "too" cheap, because they are.

Is your tv compatible with progressive scan signals? If it is, and doesnt have a decent line doubler with 3:2 pulldown, I'd look at getting a decent progressive scan player. They've come down in price a lot recently and the quality difference is remarkable.
Their cheap like borscht right now. There's one for sale at one of the electronics superstores for 88 bucks. I'd spend a little more to get a good brand name one. I paid a little over 200 bucks for mine from Sears (made for Sears by ???). It does what I need - nothing fancy. You shouldn't need a decoder. It should hook right up to your TV or entertainment system.
I've found that boxing day sales aren't always the best prices for the good stuff. This is when stores take the opportunity to dump their old stock and "crap". Wait till later in January when the real sales happen. If you were a big name stereo store and had people starting to line up just after midnight, would you need to sell your good stuff for cheap? They play on what the public "perceives" as a "chance in a lifetime".
Myself, I'm waiting for recording DVD's to be widely available and reasonably priced.

PS2 really is the best of both worlds for the money.
