Default Best way to reduce the picture file size?

I wanted to upload pictures on a forum "gallery." But I always get file size exceeded. The software that came with my digit cam (Cannon Powershot A80) don't seem to have too much features to reduce the file size. Do I need to buy a software to do this kind of operation?

Even the basic software that came with your digital will work. You'll need to find the export setting that will resize the image. You can do this in two ways - lowering the dpi resolution (say from full at 300 dpi to screen at 72 dpi) and changing the picture size (say from 1800x1200 pixels to 1280x1024 pixels).

You want to lower the dpi first, then scale the image to the appropriate size. If your software has an export feature, try exporting to email to get a size you can upload. You'll know you have a working file size when you get it below 1MB - although it may not be optimized, it will allow you to post.

You can reduce pictures in windows if you are using a pc. Search the internet for windows picture resizer program. It is a add-on to windows.

They are too small for wallpapers and such, but hey, you got them up. Try to find the resize function in your software and aim for 1600x1200 or so.

use IrfanView www.irfanview.com, it's free and it has lots of other functions you may or may not need...foir example, you could resize your images in batches if you have a lot of them.

edit: hyperlinked the link

you are all NOOBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Open your image with MS paint (comes with all windows versions). click 'image' on the menubar. click 'stretch/skew' set the values to a percentage of what u want to resize it to. just make sure they are equal, to keep proportions right.

if you're looking to compress the file (reduce file size /w out shrinking the image), you should be able to save it as a jpeg, reopen, save again, reopen. It should compress a tiny bit each time, while losing a bit of quality.

if you have photoshop, you can just use the "save for web" option and adjust the image quality to your liking which will also display the image size at the bottom
