I can't comment on reliability, but I've had chances to borrow my friends' digital cameras and between the Sony and Canon models I tried, I liked the Sony better. They both felt like they were well made, but I thought the Sony was easier to pick up and use. With the Canon I felt it would have been easier if I had a manual to browse through first.

That said, I have two Nikon cameras and they both take quality pictures, and I've had no problems as long as I've owned them.
