Boston Marathon - 4:53 per mile average!
Damn. That's just inhuman. I used to run crosscountry and track in high school (11 years ago) and the best I could do for 5k's was high 18's. I do a 1.5 mile run for the Air Force fitness test in about 9:20, but I definitely don't run as much as I used to.
+1 for the insane comments. I also did cross country in high school and can't imagine running that fast for that long. I was amazed at my teammate, who later won a state championship and did well on a regional level, running 15:02 for a 3 mile course. I did the same in 20:19, which I was thrilled with.
God I hate to run........it feels like torture when you get a cramp and breathing like someone is sucking the life out of you. The fastest I ever ran in my Highshool PE class was 6:55, and I gave it all i got
I know it's not much but.......

i was also a cross country runner back in jr high. was the fastest non latino in the school. however, soon after, i thought to myself that running is pretty lame imo. some people are genetically better at it, it hurts the knees, can cause arthritis, people who do lots of it look like sinewy, string beans and i never felt that "runner's high" people talk about. kudos for those who ARE into it. but i quit.
4:53 is a insane numbers and doing it over and over and over.
I think world record for 1 mile is little under 4 min, but doing a 5 min/ mile on a marathon is crazy.
I read few post above and we have few good runners. that is very impressive.
I know military folks know but running fast in the military is a must but for Infantry, Rangers, and Special Ops guys...we also have to able to carry heavy things for many many miles. Like 24 miles with about 90-120lbs gears in boots.
So, I try to balance speed with strength. I think I can run 5:30 1 mile, but I normall run 3-8 miles...about 7 min/ mile pace.
Fastest I ran 3 miles was 17:55.

i ran a 5:25 mile in high school. nowadays, i think it would take me like 2+ hrs to run a mile. i'd run 2 laps, go for some food, smoke some cigarettes, run a lap, then walk the last lap. but i would definitely sprint the last 200m. if it was a good run i might vomit at the end for my runners high.
The world record for the outdoor 1600m (1 mile) is 3:52.48 by John Walker of NZL (New Zealand?), 36 years old on 02/07/88 (according to the Olympic Website). That is fawking crazy fast. I used to be able to do a 400m in about 54 seconds, once. I couldn't imagine breaking a minute 4 laps in a row.
