Default Buying a car from a stranger

so im buying a car from a guy in virginia, im taking out a loan from my mom (ill pay her back in a week when my s2k sale is finalized) and my mom being traditionally chinese truly believes there are tons of loopholes in the law and everyone's a bad guy. im actually buying the car from a well-respected forum member (who shall remain nameless and can come forth upon his own free will) so im not the least bit worried as to getting scammed. but what does one do to "secure" the deal?

my ideas that got shot down:
check sent via certified mail w/ signature confirmation. (signature tying address to seller)
and the bank will have records of the large sum of money being deposited

what else can i do to secure the transaction?

ask him to set up an ebay motors private auction for you to purchase from. this way, ebay insures your purchase (up to $50,000 i believe)

GL with your purchase

You live in CA, do you really have to purchase a car that far away? You can't find one in the CA? May I ask about the detail of the car?

are you worried about the condition or not getting a car?
if you secure transport, have the driver make sure everything works, how else would he get it on the truck right?
also, have a local member vouch for the car and take it for a test drive and once over before it is loaded. there are tons of members in the NOVA community.
the shipping company is responsible for any damages that occur in transit, so they check it out pretty thoroughly.
if it was in NC, i would do it for you.

Buy a $300 round trip ticket, fly out there do the paperwork. Fly home with the title and have the car transported. Or just fly out and drive it back. The safest thing is to to not buy a car sight unseen (although I did once and it worked out ok). The seller did deliver the car to me and no money changed hands until I saw it.
