And then there's this statement:

What if I experience knock when using 91 octane?

Knock can be caused by a variety of circumstances.

87 / 89 / 91 is what the suppliers have around here. I burn 91oct, always have. I have never had a knock or ping. Trick is to buy the brand name gas with the good additives. The additives are what prevent the run-on knock and ping. If you don't feel safe, buy some octain additive, but it is really not necessary.

At a chevron we went to today, they already had the 91 stickers ont he pumps.

but dont worry, according to the guy that works at chevron, manufacturers design cars to work on 76 octane gas, even for our high-compression cars. so, dont worry.

This just SUCKS!!! We already have lower octane than some other places (I think the UK and Japan have 93 or better). What is up with that!!!! I think Da Hapa works for a gas company. Maybe he knows what's going on.

Is 91 octane adequate for high performance vehicles?
A: Tosco anticipates 91 octane gasoline should meet the needs of almost all premium 76 gasoline customers
What a crock of sh!t "anticipates" (we don't know) "Should" (we don't know) "almost" (we don't know). Only the gasoline lobby would be able to get away with this. I called the customer service line and the told me that it was in the interest of lowering emissions, I don't believe that for a second. Octane doesn't have anything to do with emissions. In fact cheap gas offen includes alcohol to increase octane to keep emissions down in the winter. They just want to increase their profit margins. They are Fvcking us just like they did with MTBE that has now contaminated our ground water. The lady on the phone was nice but had no idea what she was talking about. The advice she was told to give to customers from the PR department was "go to one of our stations that sells race gass and mix a gallon of 100octane to your new 91" I had to tell her that it is illegal to run race gass on the roads of California. That you can only buy that stuff for $4 a gallon and must despense it into plastic jugs. You can't completely come down on Tosco, all the gasoline manufactures in CA are going to 91. God Bless America. WTF?

bitter in CA,

Andy

My tank was almost empty yesterday so I drove to a nearby 76 pump and filled up half my tank with 91 and the other half with 100 octane.

Should this mixture be good enough???
