The insect in the original picture doesn't appear to have the jaws of a termite, but that may be an artifact of the angle at which the picture was taken.

If not, the insect may be a type of weevil that appears in, for example, flour.

he doesn't have enough momentum to make that jump; he's toast. if he straightened out his path of projectory, he might've made it.

the insect in that pic is too small. you should focus a magnifying glass over it and then take the pic of the image in the magnifying glass.

But before you take the pic, go over to the window with that magnifying glass and get a nice ray of sunshine

That looks like a subterrainian termite to me. I'd have it checked out
The other termite shown is a different kind.
Is the body segmented?

thanks for all the responses guys! i think i've determined what it is, it's a "confused flour beetle" (yes, that's the actual name). i don't have any flour, but i did have a box of graham cracker crumbs (used to make graham cracker crust ... i make a mean key lime pie ) so i checked that and sure enough, they were in there. it didn't occur to me that graham cracker crumbs had flour in them but i guess it makes sense. anyhow, i threw out the box, cleared my cupboards out and cleaned everything and didn's see anymore so hopefully that's the end of them! damn bugs!

here's a link for more info: confused flour beetle info

thanks again for all the replies

Edit: i did a little more research and i think the saw toothed grain beetle is actually more of a match to what you see in the pic i posted

saw toothed grain beetle
