Who throws the stones? I don't think I could ever throw a rock at someones face.... do they have a machine that does it, or do people "get off" on smashing someones head with rocks.?

If you've ever read the book or watched the movie, "The Lottery" it is about that. Pretty weird. This traditional little village of just a couple hundered people anually have a lottery where all the men draw out of a hat and the person with a black dot, or something to that effect, "wins" the lottery and are stoned by the town folk. Their belief was that by sacrificing a body to the gods they would have good crops. Good story....bad idea!

 

The people do it. Scot, do you really think they'll have a hard time finding people to do it?

 

yeah, it's all about the people's believe system. if the people think participating in a "stoning" is beneficial to them in some way (spiritual, or otherwise), they will not hessitate. think about the guys who crashed the planes into the WTC, etc., as well as all the sucide bombers that are still occuring daily. i'm sure they genuinely believe that what they are doing is the correct thing to do, even though there is probably no logical persuation to get us to do it ourselves...

 

The power of brainwashing, a.k.a. religion, is that people will do things that they know is wrong. Those that are stoning would probably never kill a person, certainly not by stoning, were it not for a 2000+ year old book saying that's how things should be done. And everyone wonders why there is always war...

 

I don't know about stoning... But give me the job to flip the switch on the electric chair..

World needs more capital punishment! That fit those crimes!

 

i suppose if someone possibly deserved to die.... but certainly not for sex out of wedlock.... but jesus... i don't think I could throw a rock into someone skull unless they did something damn wrong!

That would certainly discourage stupidity!!!! You cut someone off in traffic.... Stone them to death!

Seriously - what possible rationalization would lead a person to stone someone to death for procreating? This is 2003, not 610.

 

They aren't getting stoned to death for birthin' babies. These women are getting stoned for having sex outside their marriages.

I agree stoning someone for adulty is insane. I agree it's done in the name of religion. A lot of horrible things have been done under the guise of religion. I merely took umbrage to the assertion that all wars can be neatly laid at the feet of religion.
