Can you imagine getting "stoned" to death?

If she didn't have a baby, who would have known? So, in a way, she is getting stoned for procreating. Rather ironic to kill someone for giving birth. Even if it is the sex that's being punished, the baby is the evidence.

I disagree.

I apologize for my poor choice of words. Many wars can be directly or indirectly linked to religion, many can not. I didn't mean to pin all war on religion, just to point out that a great deal of blood is shed in the name of religion to this day. Stoning this woman in the name of religion is just another casualty. Fortunately, it appears that the Nigerian government has overturned the Shariah ruling.

Good point about no one knowing unless she had the baby--I hadn't thought of it that way. So, yeah, I can see the horrible irony in that.

Oh, no need to apologize! You've been perfectly nice and I've enjoyed "arguing" with someone who makes good points. It's one of the best ways to learn something new.

It is sad to see what people have done to each other because of religious zeal. I suppose the flip side is that there are good religious folks out there who have done wonderful things for their fellow humans.

Yes, there is much good in religion. Like most things, when done in moderation, nearly any religion can add a positive influence to one's life. Zealotry and/or fundamentalism is what creates the problem.

Cheers...

jmc1971, the woman was actually divorced so she wasn't even cheating on anybody. She was just having sex out of wedlock so the baby was pretty good evidence that she had sex with someone since she had been divorced for two years. Other bizarre rules of this Islamic law says that a baby can remain in gestation for five years, meaning under that law her ex-husband could be the father, and that four people must witness the crime. Luckily for her there were some ridiculous loopholes to get her out of a ridiculous punishment.

No kidding---how bizarre. I read a brief article about it and they didn't mention she was divorced--seems like that would have been important to include.

Some state laws on inheritance in the US allow for a 10 month gestation!

I guess the lesson learned here is, what ever you do, don't invite the neighbors over to watch when you plan to have sex out of wedlock in Nigera!

Very good insight RB. I recall reading about that study in psychology class, though I don't recally the context it was used in.
