How exactly is this S2000 Talk again?
Doesn't anybody READ the FAQ's?
actually Off Topic is the spot.

But back on topic. I've owned both the XT (350D) and the 20D, and the 20D is definitely nicer. I would suggest starting out with the 20D or 30D because you're going to want it eventually. It is faster and I seem to get better images out of the 20D.

Although the XT is a very nice camera, I could never comfortably hold it because it is too small......but it isn't small enough to really make a difference in traveling and bag space compared to a 20D. Maybe if you had a 1D and needed a second camera.

Well, for one, the 20D has 2 "wheels" for changing settings on the fly (important)... The Rebel XT only gets one, and a "shift" button which you have to hold down to make changes to the "other" setting if its anything like the original Rebel.

Another example of features you get with the 20D that you don't get with the XT is the 20D can select 4 different AF modes, while the Rebel XT can only select 2 modes, the other two modes are "auto-detected" based on the situation...

The 20D is also better suited for telephoto lenses because of its bigger size, the Rebel XT is kind of small, which is good for portability but bad for balance.

Try this website to see some more differences:

I didn't realize the thing about the two wheels, or the AF modes. I think you just convinced me to go with the 20D (which I was already leaning towards anyway).

Thanks for the info!

The wheels on the 20D are the best feature

3200 ISO is useable, but you'll need some noise reduction software. Either way you go, I highly recommend spending the extra $20-30 on th eye piece extender to keep your face off the menu screen, and it is just more comfortable.

Assuming you want to entertain photography as a hooby and you have no other dslrs.........IMHO go with the XT and take the extra money, add more to it when you can, and buy the best lenses you can. Camera bodies come and go but good lenses last a long time. Good glass is more important, than the body, when you get to entry level and beyond dslrs. I am not saying the body is not important. But between these two bodies the lenses will affect your photography more than the differences between the XT and the 20D. If taken care of, you will have and use the glass long after the bodies are worn out or obselete.

If $$ is a factor, spend the extra $$ for the best lens you can afford. Preferably 2 - one for wide angle and one for mid range. Buy the model that doesn't come w/ the kit lens; the kit lens is by far the weakest link and is a complete waste of money.

(D350 + L lens) > (D20 + kit lens)

The 18-55mm kit lens isn't bad at 18mm. Anything other than that it blows.
