Games-to-Film: Devil May Cry
Capcom's hit game is headed for the screen!
June 03, 2003 - Tokyo-based film distributor Gaga Communications has signed a deal with Capcom to adapt their hit videogame Devil May Cry into a feature film, according to today's Variety.
No terms of the deal were released, but the word is that Devil May Cry will be developed as a live-action feature film with a budget of around $40 million. The movie is tentatively slated for a 2005 production start with a release expected the following year.
While no plot details are available (there's no script yet), we suppose the film's story will closely parallel that of the game. The game, as described by IGN PS2, focuses around "Dante, son of the legendary Sparta, a devil lieutenant with a heart for humans who turned against the Devil Prince more than 2,000 years ago, and in doing so turned the Usurping Devil Prince's evil dreams on their head. He conquered the devil, trapping him, and then left his evil past and the Underworld, so as to live with humankind. He married a woman who bore a half-devil, half-man child, Dante."
As the game begins, Dante is a maverick bounty hunter for hire who takes on jobs involving devils and other unwholesome creatures. A stranger from Dante's mysterious past challenges him to stop the Devil Prince who has freed himself and is preparing to take over the world.
We'll keep you posted as Hollywood talent becomes attached to the project.
Gaga recently announced the acquisition of film rights to another popular Capcom title, Onimusha. Capcom is no stranger to the world of film adaptations
