I was actually fishing for a clarification of your premise. For example, do you mean if the institution of marriage didn't exist, or rather that it does exist but that JonBoy couldn't avail himself of it for some (even unspecified) reason?

I wonder if you would self-impose that constraint if society didn't recognize marriage as a valid institution.

Yes, I know I'm wandering WAY off topic...I just find this all very intriguing...
No, it's not because it was imposed on me at all - I entered it willingly and with my eyes open (well, as wide open as they can be when you haven't been married before ).

See, that's the problem for many, I think - they see it as so binding or so final that it scares them away, when in reality it should actually give more freedom in a relationship. I don't feel bound - I feel like I'm worth a lot more now...

Of course, whether or not I'd feel this if no societal constraints were applied is really a philisophical question - I don't know if I'd have an answer, since it's sort of like saying "Would you fall in love with a purple girl if that's what was considered appropriate?".... It's not the way it is so I can't really say. However, given my morals (which is the real issue here - not societal constraints), I would have to say that I can't see myself outside of a marriage, having such a relationship....
