I have a Sony Z1A with Centrino...and it is the longest battery life laptop I have ever had. It easily doubles of non-Centrino laptops. I bought it the day they came out and it has been absolutely trouble free.

I have a new inspiron 8500 and totally fvcking love it. I have had EXCEPTIONAL service from dell in general, and with this laptop in particular. I had a complication that wasnt an easy fix and they went so far above and beyond I can't say enough praise for their support and service.

Built like a tank, you get what you pay for. T40p is the ultimate which I have in the model 2373G5U.
The T40 series looks like a contender also...but what justifies the $1000 price increase from a T40 to T40p. Only difference I saw was 256MB more RAM, 20GB bigger HD, and 32MB bigger VC. Does it come with a Titanium case or something?

sorry, but IBM is overpriced IMHO.

i've had a Dell Latitude C600 for the past 2 and half years, and though i've had a bit of problem, it's been the most troublefree computer i've ever had. whatever problem i did have (in Hong Kong no less!) was fixed by Dell Hong Kong in 2 days.

i travel a lot internationally so after that experience my vote goes to Dell.

not sure about sony or IBM global support though - maybe the extra $1500 you pay for the T40P (over a loaded Inspiron 8600 with 128MB video RAM) is worth the service?

Also, if you guys know of any good laptop forums, please post 'em.

I've found http://talknotebooks.com/. Although they seem to be pretty biased towards the Sager line.

There is a new Dell inspiron 8600 with the Centrino processors too. Why lug around another battery and deal with heat when you can get relatively comparable performance, longer battery life, and less heat for just a bit more money? That extra battery is gonna cost about 100 bux anyways....
Maybe they just dont like dealing with Intel. Most of the industry feels similarly, although they continue to.

My keyboard was retrofitted with a custom one-off unit from Dells own engineers, the battery was free, and my service and support have been unparalleled. Sorry you and your associates have had a bad time of it. I really must disagree wholeheartedly though. As for centrino.... there are some caveats to being an early adopter and looking over your shoulder wistfully is fruitless when it comes to technology. Whatever it is, theres something better along soon.

Unless you want the best of the best you are going to be more than fine with a T40 instead of a T40p. ALL T40's have the titanium casing so no worries there. The T40p has 7200rpm hdd + bluetooth and some other trinkets I like, but they are not essential for most people.

i agree: spending $1500+ more for an exotic metal casing, an 1800rpm faster hdd, plus bluetooth (which hasn't taken off yet in the states), is really not essential for most people.
