$7 isn't exactly cheap (or expensive). I've seen them go for $3 before. And it's true; $100 Monster HDMIs work the same as those $3 ones, but look prettier. They're ALL made in China, so it's a moot point.

Yup. It's 0's or 1's, most cables (or is it the standard?) also have some type error correction. It works or it doesn't.
Now some would argue that the shielding of the cables has something to do with quality depending on if you are running them through your walls, interference, blablabla. But I'm not convinced. I have cheap monoprice cables as well as the Monster M series and see no difference on my 50".
