Dumbass move of the century......

[QUOTE]

Chicago Police officers should begin receiving new Chevrolet Tahoe sport-utility vehicles as part of Supt. Jody Weis' plan to replace the entire fleet of Crown Victorias. (Handout photo)

252It's a long way from horse-drawn police wagons.

Before the snow melts this early spring, Chicago police should begin receiving new Chevrolet Tahoe sport-utility vehicles (right), part of Supt. Jody Weis' plan to replace the entire fleet of Crown Victorias, the police car of choice for decades.

The SUVs have been a pet project of Weis' since he took over almost a year ago. In November, the city signed a $59 million contract with suburban Advantage Chevrolet to provide as many as 2,000 Tahoes over the next three years, but given the city's budget woes, it's unclear how many will actually hit the street.

Each SUV costs $24,977, though options such as spotlights, police flashing lights and custom paint jobs could add thousands of dollars. The department also has the option to buy up to 60 hybrid SUVs with better mileage. Still, a study done by Michigan State Police show SUVs get about the same mileage as the old Crown Vics

Now....what's the dumbass move you ask? Well, they are buying them for potentially better all weather conditions...(I wont get into gas mileage)....

Too bad no-one explained the merits of 4WD, they are buying 2WD SUVs!
Chicago has a government? Its more like a an organized crime family.

Probably because the cops never turn them off. They can be sitting for an hour at an accident site and the car will be idling the whole time.

Possibly over the lifetime of the vehicle?

Remember, city cop cars don't get a lot of highway miles. . . and in the case of my town, when they do get highway miles, it's usually at 70+ mph.

A few towns around here are switching over to SUVs. . . I think mostly for the equipment-carrying abilities and general mass advantage.

It's in case they have to head out suddenly. Yes, it's a huge waste of gas and yes, it makes their cars easier to steal. However, they're under the mindset that no one is stupid enough to steal a police car, but it happens occasionally.
