Chocolate Lab
So this past weekend my Rhodesian Ridgeback passed away due to old age
So I need a new dog to fill the void and I've been thinking about a new dog. What do you guys think about chocolate labs? I think they are absolutely gorgeous and am actively searching for one now. I really don't know too much about them except they can get over weight and that they are very loyal. Anyone have any experiences with them?

Best dogs in the world (look at my avatar). My lab passed away a few years ago but he was the best pup I've ever had.
Choco labs are like all labs in that they love people, are VERY intelligent, have almost human like emotions/expressions and are family friendly.
I'd highly recommend getting one. They are as low maintenance as a dog can be.

get the same as you had... Rhodesian Ridgeback. 4me i usually have an irish setter around, never had the same luck with any other breed
adoption is always an option, you dont get the input as you would have owning them as a puppy
hip dysplasia is more a problem in the common breeds

We recently got a chocolate lab. We wanted to get a dog to bond with our son. They are best friends, "constantly side by side exploring this big world". I can't give you much advise as ours is still a puppy (he is aout 18 weeks). But I can say this, he doesn't want to be alone. He is happiest when he is playing with my son... in fact they are playing right now as I type this. But if Bouncer (the dog) is outside and we are inside, he isn't happy -- he REALLY DOES believe he is a memeber of the family (and he is).
Beautiful dog... we have been happy with our choice.

one of my very good friends has two chocolate labs. they are quite easily the friendliest dogs i have met. they always play, have not gotten rowdy, and love people. we used to put the dogs stuffed animal behind his collar and watch him try and get it off rolling around. he just recently got the second one and when it gets excited from playing and being pet, it just falls over...its really funny
my cousin has a Portuguese water dog. very loyal and well behaved...not as fun as the labs though.

Sorry for the loss of your pet, I think Labs are good choices. I have a friend that has two chocolate labs and they are good dogs. Very playful and friendly from the times that I have seen them. The wife and I are also considering getting a Chocolate lab, currently we have a American Eskimo and a Chihuahua/ Terrier mix.
I've decided to get the chocolate lab or maybe http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/weimaraner.htm

I don't have any info on breeders but I don't think you will ever regret getting a Chocolate Lab. Wonderful animals. My chocolate lab was easily the most friendly, and intelligent pet I have ever had. Just keep in mind they are large and very active so they need a lot of time outdoors or they will become overweight. Oh, and be careful around their tails when they're happy, my lab swung his tail so hard it would leave welts.
My current choc lab is rowdier than my past two black labs. Taller too, at 120 lbs and just barely starting to bulge. Like all labs he is clumsy as heck and his tail is a loose cannon in the house. They shed a lot of hair and the wife banished him to the back yard (easy to live outside in So Cal weather).
