Yea, as an Asian, I'm not sure I find "oriental" as offensive as the n-word. But, in general, whenever an ethnic group prefers not to be called a certain term, the rest of society should respect it and adjust accordingly. Case in point: the use of "colored" to describe black people.

I'm white but my ex-girlfriend is asian...I was out fishing once and people were passing around pictures of our significant others, and this guy said "oh...she's an oriental." and I went semi-ballistic because that's, to me, analogous to a hypothetical situation where one of her acquaintances would refer to me as a "cracker." Archaic and derrogatory...using words like those as descriptive adjectives for people simply makes the user seem uneducated and naive. It's like people who use "gay" and "fag" as derrogatory terms. Don't do it in front of me...I'm a gentle person but once after a hockey game the opposing coach called my team a "bunch of pansy faggots" when we were supposed to be shaking hands, so I broke his nose and gave him a concussion (from what his players told me...they hated him too). got suspended for two games but i think i got my point across.

There's no need to hate...

Well let's see if things hold up under close inspection.
Ni&%er is defined as a disparaging term for a Black person:

sheesh, not to be argumentative but i think you slightly missed my point...I object to the use of the word as a derrogatory term...just as I object to the use of any word in a derrogatory manner. Any word can be meant to harm (or even if not meant, can harm without the user's knowledge; naivete is not an excuse, though).

I agree with you that using it in a manner such as you described is perfectly acceptable; the context of the word's usage determines whether it offends me or not. Personally I would say Asian, or try to be more specific than that, when describing something such as food or culture. I may be hypersensitive to the use of demeaning adjectives, too, because I have long suffered it and seen others suffer from it, and I know that no good comes of it. thankfully my peers seem to have grown out, to a certain extent, of the stage where they get off on the overt public humiliation and degradation of others...but only to a certain extent. The ills of society plague us and will always plague us, but I will continue to do my part to "spread the love" so to speak.

Cheers,

I'm asian, and i find it mildly offensive when people say Oriental. I think back in the old times.. when it was a semi-racist remark... Why can't they just use asian!!! gosh!!

How about the fact that they have a code for Hispanic AND a code for Mexican????

All this should be a surprise no one. A small vocabulary for small minds.
