Cider Bug or Cider Spider
At Christmastime my wife and I make gifts of goodies for our friends and family. One of the items is a combination of flavorings for making spiced cider. We dry the peel from half an orange, then fill the dried shell with brown sugar. To this we add a whole nutmeg, a piece of cinnamon stick, two whole allspice, and eight cloves. The nutmeg is the head, the cinnamon is the body, the allspice are the eyes, and the cloves are the legs.
The original recipe, which my sister-in-law got from who-knows-where, calls these things "cider bugs." However, because there are eight legs, perhaps "cider spiders" would be a better name; it is more poetic, to boot.
So, which should it be? Cider Bug? Or Cider Spider? You decide.
