Default Computer gurus: Need help diagnosing win98 problem

Hi guys,

I have a win98 PC which freezes up every fifteen minutes or so for about 2 minutes and then unfreezes itself.

What do you think the cause is? It has only started doing this recently and has not had any modification software or hardware done for a long time before the problem.

Could it be a virus?

What could be the solution? Re-install win98?

Thanks,

Dominik

Question: Is the harddrive light on during these freezes? As in, does it seem to be reading A LOT from the harddrive during the freeze?

Hi,

Many different things could cause this problem, try the following to eliminate some of the common causes:

#1
Take off the cover to the computer, inspect your power supply fan, cpu fan and any other fans that are installed. Are they spinning. Leave the system on, during the time that the system hangs, are the fans still running? Did having the cover off, lengthen the time that it takes for the system to hang? You may have a heat related problem if the fans are not working.

Look in your cmos setting or control panel settings for power management. Are your hard drives spinning down after 15 mins? Disable all power management features and see if this helps.

#2

Delete the contents of c:windowstemp and reboot. This will get rid of corrupted temp files.
Download adaware 6.0 from lavasoftusa.com, install and get rid of any spyware software.

Hopefully this helps.

If it doesn't, just reinstall windows right over it again. If you want to have a clean and more stable system, reformat then reinstall windows.
