Default Computer Probs...please help

Well, I've ran into another problem w/ my pc that is driving me nuts. But of course, like any other unsolvable problem, I know I can always count on the "off-topic" area in the forums for help.

Here goes,

I installed McAfee VirusScan 6.0 on my pc, after which, my scanner stopped working. It is an HP ScanJet 4100C and is connected via USB. Everytime I open the scanner program, I get a message that says some other program is currently using the scanner and that I need to turn off this other program before I try using the scanner. I've uninstalled a whole bunch of programs, including the VirusScan, and I've reinstalled the scanner drivers and associated programs numerous times. But I still can't get the scanner to work. I still get that same error message.

It seemed like installing the VirusScan caused the problem in the first place so I uninstalled it, but that didn't fix the problem. Any ideas people?

Thanks!

Here's a clue:http://www.hp.com/cposupport/scanners/supp...c/bps03107.html

Try other printer forums too.

hey man, thanks a bunch! I'll try it when I get home. Did you actually go on the web and search for this or did you already have this?

Man, that's why I love this forum!

go to www.sysinternals.com and get a dll viewer. This will show you all the dlls and exes being used and you can turn them off one by one until your scanner starts working. Atleast thats what I would probably start with. Or just type msconfig at the start/run line and disable EVERYTHING under startup and see if it works.
