[B]You can download ANY media file, except those for RealMedia (it sucks anyway).
What you do is View Source in your browser and find the embedded link to the media file.
Make a html page with the media link as a normal href tag.
Upload the html page to your site or server.
Right click on the link in IE and select Save Target As...
Enjoy.

I was just discussing this with my friend the other week.
For instance, you guys remember this Skyline amateur Track vid they posted a month or two ago? Can someone post how to save this file?

It streams to media player, but if you try to 'save link as' you just get the http link over and over.
My friend and I were discussing the likelihood of there being a 'dummy Windows media player' out there, to capture streams such as these. Or creating one if it doesn't exist. Basically, create your own fake media player program that operates exactly as media player does, but captures the data to your drive instead of playing it. kinda like packet spoofing. I haven't got around to searching around for this yet. I don't know if it's worth the effort for most people to create a program like this just to save a few videos, or if there are much easier ways than that to do it.

Many streaming formats (i.e. wmv) can be downloaded as regular files through HTTP from normal web servers, to normal web browsers.
Other streaming formats were designed to prevent copyright violation. Such streaming video is commonly accessed through proprietary protocols (i.e. protocols other than HTTP). As a result, only the producer (stream server) and consumer (player) know how to transfer the media. Because the protocol is secret, and the player doesn't let you save the files, there isn't any way to store the streaming media to your disk -- after all, that's the point.
Now, all that being said -- there are programs, which Shoyu predicted, that act like media players, participate in the reverse-engineered secret protocols, and let you save streaming media files to your disk. A popular one, Streambox VCR, is available here: http://www.dawnload.net/audio_software/aud...reambox_vcr.cfm
The program has been discontinued do to legal hassles, and this is about the only place I know to get it.

2kturkey,
*shrug* I wouldn't bothering registering it -- the program's illegal, and I'm sure any website connected to it is long gone.
If you can't use it without registering it, learn to hack, and skip its registration routine.

Thanks for this Chroot. I am trying to install but having difficulties during registration - time outs back to streambox.com etc.. Hopefully it'll work out soon.
