the answer is that there are neurons in your eye that stop firing when given the same stimulus - hence the pink dots seem to vanish.

also, your cones are saturated and cry out for relief if given the same stimulus (oposite of pink is green) so you see the green dot when the pink fades (temporarily) to gray - and again disappears when it turns back to pink

I remember this from my Ninjitsu training, it teaches to keep the eyes in constant motion when looking at a specific thing.

I believe the term is "sensory fatigue"
