As awesome as Waze is, it is not a full replacement for a radar detector. It is dependent on other Waze users to report police, and a lot of times they'll miss a few. Also, Waze is useless against police cars that are rolling, as there is no way to track them. Ideally, you could use a radar detector, and have Waze as backup.

Many of the places I drive have sketchy cell service, so I'm guessing you're SOL in those areas?

Didn't even think about that, but yeah that would be a problem. Waze is great if you can use it, but it is NOT intended to be used as a replacement for radar detectors.

Plus, if I'm understanding it correctly, it wouldn't do much good in rural area (it relies on others to report cop locations, right?).

Sounds cool though in the right areas.

+1 for v1 and Waze together. Each one covers the weakness of the other. That being said, nothing is foolproof. I have no speeding tickets in the past 5+ years and I drive 50k + each year.

If I read the thread correctly, the OP shouldn't have a radar detector in his state, so Waze it is. . . (although I agree it's not totally reliable b/c of other users, cell reception, etc.).

y'all need to take 30 seconds download Waze and use it. its free! Aside from the cop thing it automatically reroutes you around traffic, has an easy to use GPS and tells you of road hazards like retreads laying in the highway. I never drive anywhere without it.

Waze totally works until it doesn't (read: the boonies).

Yeah i had the same thing here in the UK i got caught speeding (35 in a 30) because i was going up hill and obviously you need to give it more going up hill.

Was total bull in my opinion, i went on a speed awareness course and a good 35% of the people there got done on the exact same road for the exact same reason just going up or down a hill, not intentionally speeding but you cant be looking at your speedo 24/7 can you =\ f'ing annoying i feel your pain!

It's an awesome app! It just isn't meant to replace a radar detector (what the OP needs). I use it every day on my commute, so there's no need to convince me.
