Cops, national security and profiling.
#1 Common Sense - Everyone should try practicing it.
#2 Vigilance - During crisis times, some rights need to be stretched and/or temporarily suspended (not that I like that). Vigilance is required to keep the innocent from being unjustly punished. Vigilance is required make sure the rights are restored when the crisis is over.
#3 Hang onto your second amendment rights! The Bill of Rights was written to protect the citizens from an overbearing government, not for protection from criminals.
#4 Hang onto your first amendment rights. If someone assaults you because of something you said, it's the government's job to prosecute them. If the government creates a law that limits what you can say, it's our responsibility to get the law overturned.

seems a lot like politics =P
#5 work with the system first always rather than outside of it ... if you are protesting don't disrupt other peoples civil liberties or commit crimes in the name of protest, do it legally, peacefully. If people aren't listening to your satisfaction or don't seem to notice try a different approach within those confines.
#6 have respect for everyone. Even if they are bastards, idiots, backstabbers, treat them with as much respect as you can. If you are in a job that requires you to do things that other people aren't going to like, such as arresting them, try to treat them with as much respect as you can.
um, back to work.
