Yikes. Sorry to have led you down the wrong path, jsc. I suppose these questions merit more than a few minutes' thought.
Suggestion: Try Dirichlet's test for 1a.
Good luck.

heheh no worries frycow, at least you gave it a shot. Hopefully Magician will chime in again and give some more hints on the problems.

There's a name I haven't heard in a long while!

This is an interesting suggestion, although showing that the partial sums of (cos n) are bounded might be pretty tough. A quick Excel test of the first thousand terms suggests that k = 1.55 will be sufficient (I'd propose k = 2 to be "safe"), but that hardly constitutes a proof.

jsc2K: What progress have you made on b) and c)? (If we do your final for you we should get the grade, n'est pas?)

we haven't learned Dirichlet's test and I have no clue what it is or does. I haven't made much progress on any of these problems. I am studying for a chemistry final at the moment and will continue these math problems on the weekend.

btw. what does "n'est pas" mean?

It's French for "Isn't that so?".

If you have any (inorganic) chemistry questions, I'd be more than happy to assist you there! I'm currently taking organic, myself.

<-- Jack of all trades, master of none.

Good luck on the finals.
