Tradition dictates that a craker is someone with a intentions beyond the defacement. A cracker is someone who simply does the hack for the technical chalenge or sport. Hince he normally leaves the route of his entrance in a note for the admin. He is White Hat as he does not destroy who he enters. And some white hats use destruction as a method for political expression. so they get mixed in with the below.

Black hat is someone with bad intent, Distruction or simply marking net space is there deal. The is a large clack hat convention ever year right after defcon, it is mostly unix and apache stuff but it is a fun show to go to. Of course some linux and unix guys use this to describe themselfs regardless of orientation, this has always confused me but its my believe that it is simply a self congraulatory thing as they often are white at heart.

We had a big discussion about this last year at DEFCON 9. Every year it gets a little more and more vauge as the lines in the sand get moved. Mainly as the technical knowldge gets less and less for the more entry level guys the more trouble we have.
With the script kiddies running around and the tools they use getting more and more avialbe and user friendly its very easy for them to just throw large amounts of script and servers and walk away a winner.

I Personally go to both shows just to see what I will have to deal with in the future and to keep up on the current intrusion methods to keep my self and my project data safe and to go out drinking in Vegas.

I will be going to DEFCON this year if it happens because as 802.11 starts to get on its legs there will be a push to intergrate it into a lab commercial setting and well that scares me as on the key fob method right now seems to be the only secure way to do things. Last year was nice and quite but there were still a lot of division between the young guys and the moderatly old people like myself.

StormBringer: like WestSideBilly says, I think you have it backwards

As far as 802.11b being implemented, it is plentiful. Grab a wireless pcmcia card, a laptop and netstumbler and drive around any many metro area and you will find an assload of WAPs without WEP, with default settings, handing out IP addrs to anyone who asks.
I've seen 802.11b implemented in a number of corporate environments already. Scary, yes...very scary.

Rumor has it that a certain Senator from MA has a wireless network in his office

It is my understanding that the true definition of hacker is a someone who codes and modifies existing code. No malicious intent implied.

A cracker is someone using password generation, loop holes in operating systems and other looholes to break into secure systems and crack software security systems.

I realise that the term hacker is often used when cracker should be but in this case I think ChrisS got it right.

And here I thought a cracker was a white person or something to spread peanut butter on.

Ferrari played team racing the way team racing is played. After all, the product they are trying to buy is the championship, not a checkered flag. Shume' made the obnoxious execution of the team strategy. I don't buy that he was big-hearted on the podium. He's not used to getting booed and he wanted it to stop.

But the bottom line is this is how team racing is played and the two year contract Rubins just signed specifically required him to move over. Rather than picking on Ferrari, it might be better to just call for an end to team racing.

As to crackers and Ferraris, I thought this post was going to be about the ferrari Lil' Duece Ferrari I saw in one of the rags this month.

Well pop in to see one of my friends to discuss the whole thing. He tells me that you guys are right on the naming convention, but his boss walks in hears the conversation and backs me up. We had a nice talk about it and we all decided that it is way to confusing and went out and had a beer. Turns out it has a lot to do with where you are from and your definition of a hacker, mostly depending on your view of there orientation.

As for the 802.11 yes I have gone out and warjacked around the house and the office just to see whats out there. I got a few hits, wide open no freq or password changed from the factory. Never went beyond just recieving, I found a real neat paper on how to crack 128 bit encryption on the 892.11 network. Most people have been using the simple fob method as it really is the best way to get around the whole spoof and crack bit.

I have been playig with airport/wifi on my powerbook's internal card for some time. I have been looking all over for some early un coded aurora cards but have not had any luck. I am under the impression that you can simply set then back to the old code quit easily but have not looked into it that hard yet.
