Yeah this is disgusting. Just kill the animal and be done with it. I heard from a friend about how they strip animals of their skin and extremities while ALIVE in Chinese slaughterhouses, among other abuses. Just hearing the story without pictures it was grotesque enough to make me want to gut the guy doing it.

There is no excuse for that level of senselessness, and psychologically it fosters strengthening a very ugly side of human nature. I have no problem farming animals as resources for myriad purposes, but making them live a tortuous life, and die a death no living thing should ever endure is intolerable.

There is a reason why they do this to fugu (puffer fish). Although I can't explain the eye poking behavior, the reason why they serve it while still alive is so that the neurotoxin remains in the gland. If the fish is killed, the toxin is released into the blood of the fish, making it more dangerous to eat.
