I am a big fan of the show. Not only do I have an interest in the field (I don't want to do it, but I find it interesting), the way the show is taped makes you almost root for the captains. The family problems, the constant fighting, trials and tribulations make for a great show IMHO. The fact that it's real is nice as well.

was better before it got regualted.

If i'm not mistaken, when the show first started it was go out and get all the crab you can before the season closes, now all the boats have a quota.

Go out and get your quota and then return...

crazy work no doubt... i snowboard all over the planet, ive been cold but add 60 mph winds and waves getting you soaked after you've been up for 36 hours... those guys deserve every dime...

I believe it depends on the season and type of crab. I think certain crabs (king?) have per-boat quotas, and other crabs (snow?) have overall quotas.

I find myself thinking time-to-time going up for a winter break and doing it--but I know a) I can't cut it. and b) because of the show, I'm sure a lot of people thought this--so now you have to know someone who knows someone to get in to it, if you didn't grow up around it.

I watch religiously. Awesome show!!

On a side note, I ran into Captain Phil at John Wayne Airport. I was checking in and heard this familiar, scratchy voice behind me. I thought to myself..."Where do I know that voice". I turn around and there he is!! Really nice guy. He was decked out in Harley gear.

As far as I know, all fish/wild hunting industries are heavily regulated, including Alaska. Fish and Game have an approximate estimate of breeding numbers, and establish a certain total quota. That number then gets divided up between the boats, depending on their size. I don't think it was ever a free for all.

there was always a quota but it was not split between the boats, So... it was on you to get the biggest piece of the pie before they closed the season...

Who ever met capt. Phil shoulda got his autograph, love the guy but god he ain't gonna make it many years... He can't go out this season because of his health and he calls the boat while he's drinking and smoking...
