It's been coming now, but it's pretty much finally over:

HD DVD loses another backer: Wal-Mart going Blu-ray exclusive

Maybe Microsoft will trade pony up on the rumble motors for the controllers + money for blu-ray.

Doubtful, between their ego of defeat and sony probably not wanting to sell the liscense in the first place (if they did why would you want a PS3, the blu-ray players is one of its top selling points), I doubt MS would ever get their hands on the technology...at least not for a while.

Long story short: originally, some company won the patent war for the rumble motors used in game controllers. They were going to charge up the arse for anyone to use it. Sony said no, Microsoft bought into their stocks.

So now Microsoft needs something Sony has, and Sony wants something Microsoft has. Obviously Blu-ray is worth a lot more than some rights to using a motor. It'd be cool if the PS3 could get the rumble back...Juuuuuust a dream.

Rumble's already back on the PS3 in Japan and they're releasing the new controllers here in the US in the next few months. Microsoft doesn't have the patent for that. Sony was just too cheap when they released the PS3.

Huh~ I'm glad rumble's back. As for the patent, Immersion owns it. As I recall, Microsoft bought into their stocks at the time when Immersion won the law suit. According to CNET, MS paid $26 million. I wonder how much Sony got it for.
