debate over delta force and marine force recon
can anyone here answer this basic question, two of my friends keep arguing over whether or not the delta force or marine force recon is better?
any help from military buffs?
any help from military buffs?
different missions, both groups are well trained, as well as the navy seals, army green berets, etc.
delta force is made for specific mission requiring precision with the fewest amount of people/suppport possible.
force recon is responsible for intelligence gathering within an area of operations ahead of the current battlefield, i.e. behind enemy lines.
the thing to remember is that with any small unit, you have to instill in the members the "fact" that they are invincible to help keep things together. they are going into places where they are almost always outnumbered and outgunned and need the confidence that their training, teamwork and preparation for the mission will allow them to accomplish it and get out alive.
as much as we all like to expound on how brave and tuff we are (were) in our military days, the fact that fireman rush into burning buildings and police take the chance of getting shot on a daily basis for simple things like traffic stops shows that people outside the military have the right stuff too....

Military missions require specific actions and deployment of units trained in that arena so "who" is better is determined by which unit is designed for the action needing to be taken.
You wouldn't send SEALS to do a job better suited for Delta Force nor would you send Force Recon Marines to replace SEAL team six.
There must be a moderate degree of chest thumping between these groups because it breeds success of mission and confidence but I spent a career in Navy intelligence working alongside the finest fighting men and women on the planet. Suffice to say, they are your brothers, sons, daughters, sisters.
Good training is good training, be it Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and yes...Coast Guard.

I've served closely with Force Recon. Bad A$$ SOBs. At sea they live in a Hell Hole, waiting for something that rarely happens. When it does, Hell speaks all languages. The Marine Corps special units are outfitted with old, obsolete equipment. Rangers are right above them.
Delta Force and Seals are at the Top of the food chain. They get all the good stuff, and rightly so.

IMO, same job - different uniform.
Each unit is best suited for specific missions which of course differ.
Being a Marine, most of my contact was with the recon types and I know they get the job done.
When your friends say "better", I'd venture that neither friend has a clue what the units actually do.

Of course, let's face it - the Israeli's and SAS are, bar none, the best in the world overall. Not quite as high in terms of technology but superior in terms of overall performance in just about everything. While I know that the special teams "games" they play aren't real combat, it is still significant that the US special teams (mostly the SEALs) are pretty much never among the top-ranked teams.
With regard to Delta and Recon, I would tend to say that for a go-get'em, shoot-em team, Delta is the way to go. For stealth and observation, Recon is perhaps somewhat better (but not quite so good in a firefight if required).
I'd rate Delta as higher overall, but not necessarily the best at all things.
