It looks like Palestinian Authority has managed to convince part of the the public that no celebrations took place.

The Times of London estimates 3,000 celebrants in Nablus:

So do NY Times, AP and other sites.

I've seen interviews with journalists who said they were threatened for taking photos, and the Palestinian Authority publically announced that they "couldn't guarantee the safety" of anyone who reported on the celebrations.
