The current flu shot will only protect you against certain strains of the flu. The most "caught" flu at the moment is not covered by the current flu shot. At work, we have had a flu shot program for years. I get it some years and other years, I have not (like this year). I have not ever gotten the flu since the flu shot program began, regardless of whether or not I got the shot. Lately, a great many of my co-workers have booked off with the flu. Most of these guys GOT the shot.
The flu vaccine has to be developed a year in advance based on "estimates" of what strains will be prevelant when the medicine is ready. It's a hit and miss deal. This year, they kinda missed. The most prevelant strains now ravaging the nation was not included in the development of the current vaccine. It's like buying insurance. You hope you never need it and you hope you bought the correct "riders".
Nevertheless, you will be protected against the "minority" of the flus out there, but the chances of catching those for you is not much less than anyone who didn't get the shot.

I only had a flu shot once... about 2 years ago... coincidentaly... I've only gotten the flu once in the past 15 years... and that was the same year that I got the shot..... being as it may.. I haven't had it since either, so I'm not goin for that stuff...

I got the flu two weeks ago, so no flu shot for me. I normally don't bother getting a flu shot since it's not a serious illness for most people. When I get older or when my health starts going to Hell, however, I think I'll start getting them.
That having been said, I can attest to the fact that this year's flu does seriously suck compared to the strains in the past. I've gotten the flu just about every year of my life, and none of them have come close to kicking my ass as hard as this year's.
