Stephanie, I'd stay away from the dvd based camcorders for two reasons...
1. Blank DVDs are more expensive than tapes.
2. If you plan on editing the video on the computer then putting it on dvd, you may as well record to tape initially to save on costs.
As far as other suggestions go, I had to choose between a Digital8 and a Mini-DV. I wound up with the Digital 8 because I didn't want a camera so small. Your needs may be different though...
