Default Poor quality of DVD from camcorder

I use a JVC GR-95 Digital camcorder and the mpeg files dumped from the camcorder
to the PC look pretty good quality. However, when I use some software like UltraDVDCreator to convert them to DVD file structure and then burn the DVD, the picture looks really grainy and bad! What am I missing? I used the camcorder s/w
provided by JVC to transfer the video over to the PC. That s/w only provides ability to burn VCDs but not DVDs. Anyone knowledgeable about these things? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you compressing the video files when you burn the DVDs? I'd check all the settings on your burner software, and make sure you have it set for highest quality, etc.

That's all I can think of offhand.

VCDs are always grainy if you go for full size/ full motion. This is due to the amount of compression needed. Like DiamonDave said, you should check the compression settings but you will be better off getting SW that lets you burn DVDs.

BTW I use a 5 yr old Mini DV camera (Sony PC100e) and edit using Final Cut or IMovie on my 'almost' 2yr old Apple powerbook without any quality loss. Even when I use the old 30 minute tapes I got back in '97 (When I got my first Mini DV camera, a JVC-UM1!). So you problem is definetely not the camera or the tape (at least not from where I stand)

I am trying to use some software like the UltraDVDBurner to convert and burn the camcorder dumped MPEG files into DVD. There is no setting that I can change in the software. Can you guys suggest some alternative s/w? I am not burning VCDs, just DVDs. As far as I can say, the content is just about an hour and should fit without any compression. Oh, and the files from the camcorder were moved using a USB 2.0 cable, if that makes any difference.

It could be the software...I use Nero Ultra to burn DVDs. See http://www.softwareoutlets.com/122/nero_6_...campaign=google

Everyone is mentioning the s/w. However, I think the files coming over
from the camcorder are in MPG1 (VCD) format. Is there any way to
get the files in MPG2 (DVD) format? Is this why the accompanying JVC
cd only comes with a VCD burner? When you guys are recommending these
s/w, do you use the same s/w to extract the video out of the camcorder, or
is this s/w (like Pinnacle ultra etc) used on the already extracted files?

Thanks.

Try going here http://books.jvcservice.com/ and looking for your user manual, if you don't have one.

If that doesn't work, try emailing their tech support people and ask about it. Most cameras can transfer data in various formats, but I guess it depends on how old it is, etc.
