digital camera?
I'd recommend the Sony DSC S70. Compact, easy to handle and takes great photos. It can be found for around $700. The Nikon Coolpix 990 was a close second place for me, and if size isn't a high priority, I'd bump it up to first place. I think it'll run a bit more, maybe closer to $800.
No matter what you buy, if it uses a memory card, be prepared to spend another $120-130 for one with decent capacity (64 mb).

I had an Olympus D-360L, took great pics for a 1.3 megapixel camera. I recently gave it to my daughter and I bought the Canon S100. I love it because it's just so dang small. Got mine for $429 shipped from www.buydig.com last month.
If you were looking for a 3 megapixel camera, I'd give the Canon G1 a hard look. Its got some great features... you get audio with your video clips for one, which the Coolpix 990 doesn't have.
Here's a couple sites that have lots of digicam info:
www.dpreview.com and www.steves-digicams.com/

I have been looking for a digital camera since last spring.
The top of my list keeps changing.....
Olympus C2020
Canon S10
Sony CSDS-50
Sony CSDS-70
Canon S100
I bought my latest obsession...Canon S100.
I'm loving it so far.
I'm so glad I got this one. It's probably 1/4 the size of the Sony camera. However, if you have a BIG HAND, it is not recommended!!
You won't be able to hold it. It's credit card size, and 1 inch or less deep.

I've got the Nikon Coolpix 950, which was rated the best by Consumers Report. I've been really happy with it. Easy to use, and you can do most things that you can do with an SLR. It's since been superseded by the Coolpix 990. Take a look at GOTAPEX.COM. Last week they listed a site which had the 990 camera for (I think) $365 on a special offer. It retails in the $800s! Also recommend you go to other camera sites (like cameraworld.com) and see what's on offer. BTW. Don't buy ANY camera at full price! Shop around. You can get any camera at a reduced price.

remember to check out pricewatch.com, amazon.com and buy.com for the best costs. I purchased a Kodak DC4800 a few weeks ago from buy.com - although not the best deal, at 750, it did come with a 64meg card and a second Li battery. I dig the battery - dont have to worry about messing with the four AA's or AAA's that you do in the DC2xx series cameras from Kodak.
Regarding the DC4800 - quite happy so far. The 3.1 megapixels are great, but not using it fully. It has a black and white option and speed options to simulate different film speeds. Any q's regarding this one, just ask away. Or just about any Kodak for that matter.
