DirecTiVo or Ultimate TV? (or SA TiVo?)
I like the idea of a hard drive with its higher storage capacity and no need for tapes; however, I would prefer not to be married to an outside company to make it all work. When will someone market a stand-alone unit with extended programming capabilities?

Well I made the decision. Last night my wife finally gave the thumbs up and we picked up a Sony SAT-T60 DirecTV with TiVo (DirecTiVo) receiver. We also picked up the 24" dual LNB/dual satellite elliptical dish which is required for local channels in San Diego.
I've only played with it for a couple of hours, but it's pretty cool!
Now I can record F1 and CART digitally with a satellite-quality picture!
Once the warranty is up, I'm going to crack the box and hack it to support a 80 GB second hard drive which will give up to 107 hours of digital recording time!

Hey TFota,
I have a friend that used to work at Tivo who now works at Rearden Steele. He did a lot of development work on the boxes. If you need some "hacking" help, he can give you some good resources.
Looks like Murdoch is still trying to buy DTV. According to the LA Times yesterday, the GM board is talking to him.
