There is a stupid Doberman in my neighborhood that luckily (for me) has one of those invisible fences....... then I started thinking it probably doesnt work if the power goes out.......????
it would be cool to see it run about 200 yards, then the power come back on........ watch it get zapped for 200 yards worth of rolling.....
No since they are powered by electricity. Some dogs figure out that the zap only lasts a second and go through the barrier anyway also, and later return and cross it again.
Our Great Dane will sometimes cross the invisible fence, taking the shock, if he is distracted enough - a deer running by, etc. Then he won't come back in because he doesn't want to get the shock again!
Last time he was chasing those full-size varmints he ran into a neighbors yard with an electric fence and wouldn't leave, again he didn't want to get the shock.
The invisible fence is a good idea, but not as foolproof as the real thing.
thank gawd this doberman hasn't figured it out yet.... it is mean as hell... I live in a decent neighborhood too... not like I live in the freaking city.....
hopefully it never gets out because it appears like it is ready to maul anything in its path
my dog (a doberman) has a invisible fence in the kitchen, to keep her out of the rest of the house (and the kitchen) mainly because people love leaving the door open, and our last dog got out and was hit, and killed by a passing car... (RIP Clover, man I loved that dog, just taught her to play ball)
Any way it wont work in that circumstance, but the dog probably knows the boundries of the line and wont cross it with the collar on, no matter if it is actually working. If hte battery dies in my dogs collar she will start "feeling it out" and get closer and closer, but the classical conditioning that collar inflicts wont allow her to cross the "line." The only way to get her in the front of the house is to take the collar off, then she run right out there, she knows its the collar.
They do not work! Invest in a fence. Your dog will thank you for it. I have used 3 different kinds and they all failed. One failed due to a power fluctuation, another for when the dog collar fell apart and the other was unknown (the people had no clue why it didn't work). The dogs were trained. I decided to put up a fence and had no problems since.
We have lived here for 14 years almost and our yard has a five foot high fence all around it and across the driveway, our White German Shepherd has complete run of the yard.
