I do it and then realize later (like when I'm at 50 or 80 or somesuch) that I'm doing it - it doesn't bother me, I don't have to go back and re-do them if I mess up or anything like that, just something I've always done. I find I do it more when I'm busy, I think it's a small stress reliever in ways, time for my brain to forget about everything and focus on just one thing, even for a brief second.
I'm a bit weird about a few things like that, for ex: I always have to take the same lanes when driving my usual routes, and switch lanes at regular points on my drive home (the ones that move faster) - it feels "weird" if I'm in the "wrong" lane.
