Ahem, I mean $$$, not

Got a private stash your significant other doesn't know about? What do you do with the dough?

Mine is only a few hundred bucks I use to play the market.

My paypal account...

Other than that - not a penny. Joint checking/savings etc...

Waitaminit... she knows about the paypal so I guess it doesn't count as being secret!

Nope but she has one! I pretend not to now about it because she usually uses it to buy me Xmas and birthday presents and whatnot!

My Dad does. He has used it for various things. To name a few, toys he can buy that she (mom) would not notice (Amps, guitars, speakers, tires, etc), gifts for her, bails me and my brothers out when needed. I wonder if mom has stash hhmmmm....

Yes, both my wife and I have our own pivate account that the other knows about. I don't touch hers and she doesn't touch mine. I know she sometimes hands out cash to the kids behind my back, but it's her money, and I use mine for various things (such as camera equipment or music CDs that I listen to in the S2000) that I don't want to come out of the joint account. I think it is healthy for each person to have their own stash of cash.

i'm not too hot on separate account issue here (doesn't really matter since common law marriage in the great state of CA will see to it that your assets are joined assets if all hell breaks loose), but my aunt managed somehow to save up $2 million through careful investing behind my uncle's back and when they retired (both were public school teachers), my uncle nearly had a heart attack because he thought he was retiring with a normal pension of a few $k a month. now they're living like royalty and i thought that was so cool.

If my wife has a secret stash, I don't know about it. I don't have a secret stash.

Hay, my wife is a public school teacher, so maybe her private stash is worth a lot more than I thought

But seriously, I was talking about a private stash, while your example of your aunt is a secret stash. There is a difference. My wife knows about my account and I know about hers, there is nothing secret about them. The only thing is that we each can spend our own stash the way we want and the other does not ask questions. As mingster said, in CA, everything is community property (after marriage, things acquired before marriage can still be private) and therefore makes very little difference if "all hell breaks loose".

I admire your aunt for stashing away $2M. She must be a very smart investor.

Nope - my wife and I both share the same accounts. However, I may start up my own private account in the coming year just to surprise her with gifts now and again, or for emergencies, or even for my own fun and games... That said, I'll probably get her one as well so that we can both do that kind of stuff. I think it allows a couple to have a bit of freedom without the need for sneaking around or whatever. Good for the relationship, I think.

I had a couple of accounts stashed. One was a rainy day account that is my credit card cashback account and the other is my paypal account which I use for ebay and s2000 parts. She knows the accounts exist but not how to access them, or how much they hold. She really doesn't care about knowing how to access them.
