I avoid buying clothing for others in all cases.
if you want to give the gift of fashion, just get a gift card and let the recipient decide on what to get. If you really like that dress and want to suggest it to her, print out the picture and present the URL and the picture in a gift box with a Visa gift card or other gift card and explain to her that you saw the dress and thought it was nice and wanted to give her the option of deciding on size and color or to be able to pick out something else if the style did not suit her.
That way, the recipient is not stuck with a gift that she may or may not like or fit into properly. this is especially crucial to think about if the purchase is from an online only company as it is very difficult to return or exchange items online.

Clothes for your mother.. I think that makes you a little Strange. Are you going to sneak into her closet to find her size? That would make you Creepy. What if you find something old and she's actually fatter now. Then you'll be a Jackass.
