Default Does anyone have neighbors with dogs. . .

does anyone have neighbors with dogs that bark constantly and keep you up? what can be done. About 6 months ago, my neighbors got a little mutt because their bratty kids wanted it. after about the first week, the kids grew bored with it. now the dog spends all its time chained to the fence. the way the houses are situated, it is right under my bedroom, and rather far away from their house. this dog will bark constantly day and night, anytime any person animal etc goes anywhere near it. and often times for no reason at all. i have tried discussing this with the neighbor, suggested maybe taking the dog in at nights, or even moving it closer to their house away from my window. the neigobor said in so many words, that they dont give a damn. i have filed numerous complaints with the police for the barking late at night, the police told me to talk to the magistrate. he was no help except to tell me to keep a log of exactly when the dog is barking, i did that "always". i have even contacted animal control because the people will often leave the dog with no food or water for a couple days at a time while they are gone. i have a dog myself who stays indoors, and my other neighbors have a dalmation that doesnt make a sound, but these people just dont care. what can i do? i dont want to do anything to the dog, its not his fault, but there has to be some way to make these people take responsiblity. if i lose much more sleep im going to snap

Wow, I feel sorry for you.

It seems like you have taken all the right steps, too bad all those authorities don't seem to be taking their job very serious.

I can offer no help other than you just have to keep pushing the police until they break down and do something about the problem.

Relocate the dog--say to a good home far, far away!

Other than that (which I don't recommend), just keep bugging the police and animal control.

Why don't you adopt the dog? If you don't animal control will likely take the dog and it will be killed at the shelter...

Sounds as if the dog is already being mistreated and the neighbors aren't open to negotiation--so it's unlikely they're gonna give Fido up. Which leaves calling in animal control and at least a chance he/she will be adopted.

Can you press animal cruelty charges, or must the authorities do that in VA?

If you ever watch Seinfeld, you'll know exactly what to do with the dog (Neuman!!)

Call some dog rescue organizations, some of them will surreptitiously remove it.

video tape the dog on a couple of separate occasions. Bring the tape to the magistrate.

Call your neighbor whenever the dog wakes you up - that way they are awakened too.
