I'm having a very difficult time with my studies. My mind will stray-off every 5 minutes. It's incredibly annoying. I'm thinking, but it's all nonsense crap.

Does music help you stay focused? If it does, I'm thinking about purchasing a hard drive based mp3 player during the winter season. Hopefully the price will drop.

When I'm doing homework, there is always music playing. TV is bad, b/c the visual stuff will distract you, but music helps filter out background noise that may otherwise disturb your concentration...IMO.

I study in the library and it's absolutely silent. But I still can't focus. Maybe it's just me.

Music seems to help some folks study, but it's never worked for me. I find it distracting and feel like singing along. Eventually, I end up figuring, hey screw studying, it'd be more fun to just have a beer and listen to some music.

There have been numerous studies on this subject--Rutgers University, 1967, American Phychiatric Association, 1982, University of California, Berkeley, 1998--and all reached essentially the same conclusion: almost all subjects performed more poorly on exams when they studied with even moderate levels of background noise.

In my case, I can concentrate without music but when i'm doing my homeworks, I get bored so I turn on some music. I've noticed that when i'm doing my homeworks without any distractions, there are definitely less mistakes and when i'm studying, I don't listen to music. Btw, i tried memorizing a text while chewing bubblegum and it worked.

Okay, so music doesn't seem to work. All the alernatives you guys have mentioned: work groups, chewing gum, and drinking beer () won't work for me. I have a strong dislike for all those things.

Damn, I guess staying focused should be on top of my self-improvement list.

Thanks for your input guys.

(More inputs are still welcomed. )
