Does music help you stay focused?

There have been numerous studies on this subject--Rutgers University, 1967, American Phychiatric Association, 1982, University of California, Berkeley, 1998--and all reached essentially the same conclusion: almost all subjects performed more poorly on exams when they studied with even moderate levels of background noise.

Hmmm.
I study in my bedroom, usually sitting on my bed.... so that I fall asleep on my books and learn via osmosis....
In all truthfulness, the study halls at University are life savers. Very green (lots of plants, makes the air nice and fresh), moderate temperature, and quiet.

How I wish that could be true.

Actually, these studies probably did NOT take context into account.
What has been consistently shown is that you can recall stuff you studied better if you do it in a similar context.
So
There's a term for this - I believe its . . . Hmmm . . ADD?
Just playing - in all seriousness now, I have a hard time focusing too without being somewhat distracted subconsciously - hard to explain. It's like I can be still and focus on one thing without doing another.
For example, if you sat me down for a lecture, I wouldn't be able to focus without drawing/doodling on my paper, etc. - but though I may look like I'm not paying attention, I actually am. So music does that for me as well - I can't study in silence, so I have some background music at all times.
I've heard that listening to music without words might be better as there's no chance of lyrics throwing your concentration off. But haven't been able to give that a try as I listen to mostly country and rap, so it's hard to find that genre without words.
