I imagine you could just reverse this.

I saw that the other day and I like that piece because you can put things on top of the furniture and it'll just lift up when the tv goes up.

The pop-up piece of furniture in your post above mine looks nice but you can't put anything anywhere on the unit because you will block the screen or have it flip over when that hatch flips back to pop the TV up.

I want to build one now. Only problem would be the remote operation of the unit. All other hardware could be purchased pretty reasonably I'd imagine.

Remote equipment can be pretty easy too.

I've got a bunch of the X-10 home automation stuff that I use at home already and they actually make boxes with timed DC outputs on them for projects just like this. Or, you could go find a cheap cheap RF or IR device like a crappy remote control car for 10 or 15 bucks and use the components from that. I think it is a neat project!

In fact, I think I just figured out what I'm going to do with my 20" LCD TV when I get a new one for my bedroom. It's going on my balcony in some sort of storage unit and it will pop up from behind the BBQ. This is going to be freaking awesome. I wonder how LCDs will fare in lower temperatures. I don't want to operate it in the winter but I don't want to have to bring it inside either. I'd like to be able to watch movies on my balcony, throw on music videos when people are hanging out, etc.

Well, that doesn't sound like a problem. Just insulate the box/cabinet...plus, you'll want it sealed to keep the critters out anyway.

That is my thought, as long as no moisture gets in and freezes, there shouldn't be an issue. I don't get any sort of critters on my balcony so I think it wouldn't take too much work to get this together!

Now I just need to pick up a new TV. We'll see what kind of deals I can find over the months to come.

Soon as 32"+ LCDs hit $500 then I'll go out and pick one up to replace my bedroom one and this project will get underway.

I think storage temp in the winter in Calgary may be an issue. Humidity might be an issue as well. What brand of LCD is your 20"?

We really don't have humidity here in Calgary. It's so dry in fact, that when I used to visit and for the first while when I moved here, I'd wake up every morning with nosebleeds. It's not an uncommon thing either.

The TV is a Westinghouse actually, a 4:3 unit. That was the reason I bought it years back actually, as in the bedroom it's typically television that I watch and I didn't want images to be distorted, nor did I want to sacrifice inches of display on the sides to have television show undistorted on a widescreen.

It's a pretty simple item actually, but it's survived some pretty tough stuff like being badly packing during my move from across the country and being dropped while I was mounting it on the wall. Oops
