DSL problem...need help!
probably not. do i need them for each and every line even though my dsl is connected to just one outlet?? btw, where can i buy these filters?? do radio shack carry them?? also, are they a breeze to install yourself??
Yep, you need one at each in-use phone jack. They're really easy to install -- they just connect inline. They have a male and female RJ11 plug, plug them into the wall and then the phone/modem/fax into them (don't forget that your TiVo and DirecTV/Dish boxes need one, too).
You usually get a few with the self-install kits. I'm sure I have some extras if you find yourself on the peninsula or south bay. Radio shack, Best Buy, Fry's and others do carry them, but they're more expensive than they should be.

It may be easier just to put a splitter in before the line enters the house, especially if you have a back to base alarm and/or multiple phone connections. In Australia you're supposed to get the tel company to install it but its a piece of piss if you want to do it yourself, I did mine nps.
actually, you only need the filters on the non-DSL lines - the DSL modem should not have a filter, because the filter filters out the DSL signal so you don't hear it on the phone. You don't want to splice in a splitter, because every break in the wiring causes noise on the line, and noise slows down the transmission of data.
The filters I have are all directional - make sure you install them properly, or you'll have issues.

all the filters do is keep you from hearing traffic on the line as static when using the phone. Your alarm system, if all it does is call out when there is an event, should be unaffected by any of this. You'd have to check with your alarm company to know if your alarm can coexist on a DSL line.

the filters have no effect on that, just make sure you don't have a filter between the modem and the wall. Call your DSL provider for the disconnection issues. Shouldn't happen, it's a problem with the wiring somewhere in your line, either in your house, or between your house and the phone company CO.
