Dumbass kid loses hand
He is lucky they didnt use a glass bottle, probably would have lost his eyes as well. I made those as well back in the day, only I used aluminum foil and the works toilet bowl cleaner. It had about a 2 minute delay once mixed. Once you see the bottle cloud up white you only have seconds before it blows. Everyone does some dumb shit when theyre kids, unfortunately the odds always get someone.
Thats funny bobby, I was writing the same thing and hadn't even read your post! The works was awesome!! We used to make them in 3 liter bottles. I sounded like a cannon went off. Loud as sh!t!! Speaking of the dumb shit as a kid. We made 20oz bombs, and would go throw them away in a McDonalds trash can, and run watch it go off. Seemed funny then, but makes me think how lucky I was no one got hurt now!!
How do you know he lost his hand?
We used to toss 20oz bottles in a bonfire with a little water in them. The water would boil, and BOOM! the bottle would explode. Usually the cap broke. The actual force required to burst a bottle isn't all that destructive, it wouldn't disturb the fire at all. You can do the same thing (minus the bonfire) with dry ice and water in a bottle, or probably Alka-Seltzer and lemonade. Beercans in a fire make a hell of a noise, but again, the fire is undisturbed, so even though it sounds like a stick of dynamite, it really is more like a Black Cat. The pressure builds up until the bottle bursts, and no matter what your ingredients, the bottle is going to burst at the about same point, which I have a hard time believing would do much more than take out an eye if you were unlucky. The only way to make it more destructive would be to reinforce the bottle somehow, like wrapping it with duct tape, and doing this after putting the cap on is probably not going to work very well - see video
PS: My uncle lost a few fingers and the hearing in his right ear from a M80, which is a hell of a lot louder than an exploding 20oz bottle. When you hear the echoes bouncing off the hills for a few seconds, that is something you shouldn't hold in your hand while it goes off
