Anybody know what sub-forum this all might belong?

^why do you think that I think people are undermining my way of life? I'm sure you're just being facetious but I happen to be a 2nd generation japanese american who worked his ass off in public school, got a full ride through college on scholarships, graduated with honors, and currently working on my masters on a research grant. My parents housed me and taught me to learn. Nothing more, nothing less. I have this odd feeling that you're thinking I'm a silver spooner.

I just hate seeing people waste their lives and live off of other people. Come visit Hawaii some day, you'll see mothers who pop out babies to get more $ from welfare. Pacific Islanders come down here, for every child they have the US gov'mt pays a stipend because of the nuclear bomb testing on the atolls. I see them living in public housing (cheap rent..less than 1/3 the price of private rent), driving hummers, escalades, and even the occasional S2000.

Ah, sorry I forgot to add that I was in ESL from first grade to 2nd grade. It didn't help me at all. In fact, out of all the subjects taught in grade school, grammar is probably my weakest because of it. I fought my way out of ESL by learning to love reading books. ESL suggested "see spot run...." type of books to me. Would those have helped me at all? I read my older sisters books and because of it I was able to learn vocabulary and some grammar. ESL didn't help me for shit, it actually held me back.

8D, do you believe that all students can succeed at everything they do? Do you think its fair to expect an autistic child to understand "context clues" in some sentence? I think the money would be much better spent on teaching that child how to succeed in something else. There are people who are brilliant in one subject and shitty in others. Maybe he loves math. Why not allow him to "fail" parts of grammar and nurture him in theoretical physics instead?

I SUCK at grammar and I'll admit that freely. I'm fairly good with vocabulary but grammar and writing is my weakness. I would hate to be forced to sit in class to "do okay on the grammar portion or else our school doesn't get funding!!!" instead of being pushed to learn other subjects.

NCLB has the right idea that "all children should succeed" but it goes about it in the worst possible way.

I'll get off my soapbox now.
-edit-

also, now that I actually (fully) read your first comment I KNOW you are being facetious. sorry for ignoring your (now) obvious sarcasm.

Test scores are improving, but our ability to find the correct sub-forum is declining.

test scores are improving, but that is because all the schools do now a days is prepare the students for these damn tests. It's not to make the kids more intelligent, but only so the states give them more funding. Kids today are idiots, have one count your change back to you, bet you that they can't.

If you want to see where this country is heading, watch the movie Idocracy...
waiting for superman is a fairly well written documentary about the current government school system. I advise anyone in a discussion about our government education to watch it at least once.

I didn't think that the Trololousel was a clue within context, nor was Alpacas Magazine.

If the mods aren't going to move a Politics thread when it comes up, I'm gonna take this sonofabitch as Off-Topic as I can. The McCarthy-style conjecture on my end just suited my mood.*

*One germane truth in that whole steaming pile I wrote though, is assuming that NCLB had anything to do with school reform. ETS made a windfall as a result of that being passed the first time. They've got a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course on their grounds. I'm jelly.

Sorry you're so offended, 8D. Maybe this will better suit your mood.
