i haven't had a chance to look at the reviews, but how does this compare to the Oppo players?

i have a big collection of DVD myself, and purchased about 10 blu-ray discs so far. Im very impressed with what blu-ray discs are able to deliver, however i dont see reasons to stop buying dvds because they still carry large collections of classic films.
i tend to purchase blu-ray discs for their PCM audio feature, huge dynamics for action/explosive type of films, or may be concerts.

HD DVD will win in the end. There's just too much crap going on with Blu-Ray (expense, security, Sony product
, no requirement to play reg. DVDs).
, no requirement to play reg. DVDs).To the original thread starter, I forgot to mention, alot of HD-DVD titles come with regular DVD format on the other side of the disc....so in a way, you aren't really buying a whole new format.
also, HD-DVD has sold way more players.
The vast majority of the Blu-Ray players are PS3s. Also, many of the Blu-Ray disc "sales" were freebies given to PS3 owners (Casino Royale for example).
Why is this important? Stand alone players will likely sell more discs per player, that's why. PS3 is a game machine first. Many if not most of the PS3 owners are gamers and may buy some discs, but probably not many. Also, PS3 sales are tanking bad (my best buy has 40 of them) and is dead last in the new console race, and that is bad considering it is the newest.
Also, HD-DVD has consistently better picture (MPEG2 Blu-Ray anyone?) and better features. Blu-Ray seems to be a continuously evolving format...for example the Java features not available in current players.

Oppo and upconveting DVD players are awesome, but don't hold a candle to an actual HD format dvd.
As to which will win, I'm guessing Blu-Ray judging from the better titles, which is unfortunate because I have HD-DVD.
As for upconverting, I stuck a regular dvd into my 360 HD-DVD player and it looks awesome, so don't worry about your old collection.
Current HD-DVD players will make your original collection better than before.

The war is still undecided. Saying the majority of BR players are PS3's is not a bad thing. They do play BR disks and there are a truckload of them in the wild now.
I don't have a preference. I have a PS3 and a 360 (no HD-DVD add-on yet but that's chump change). HD quality is all in the encoding and it seems both formats offer equal quality today.
Even though HD-DVD is a smaller capacity disk, the reviews I read say the HD-DVD extras are packaged and controlled better than BR disk extras. Extras are one of the factors that make me go buy a disk to own. Some folks point to the extra BR capacity but it doesn't mean squat with any release so far.
$$$$$$ will have less effect now than it did for VHS tapes. I figure cheap players would swing this market but if both formats drop price together then the war will continue. I used to think Total HD (two-sided disks, both formats) would take over but studios seem unwilling to pay the extra per-disk manufacturing cost. Bad news for everyone. Standards are good!
